Artificial Night Lights Increase Cancer Risk

Artificial Night Lights Increase Cancer Risk
LAN (= Light at Night) increases breast cancer risk for women and prostate cancer risk for men. It seems that our modern life style provides too much light at night and not enough daylight. Regarding the melatonin levels at night time it turns out, that so called energy saving lamps (CFLS) are more efficient to suppress melatonin compared to incandescent lamps due to the higher portion of blue light. This higher proportion of blue is found in the light of ALL fluorescent lamps regardless their correlated color temperature (CCT). Melatonin sets the organs into the regeneration mode and acts as an antioxidant. It also synchronizes the organ clocks with the central body clock which is located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the mid brain. Melatonin is also able to reduce the energy production in mitochondria in order to set the cells to regeneration mode during nighttime.
